CO2 Laser Optics from ULO Optics
Dual-Focus Lenses
Dual-Focus lenses are a revolutionary new type of lens for CO2 laser cutting, that can be supplied as a direct replacement for your conventional lens.

By distributing a calculated fraction of the laser energy into a secondary (lower) focus, the lenses provide faster, cleaner cuts, with easier initiation and the elimination of sub-surface dross.

Dual-Focus lenses also allow much thicker materials to be cut at a given laser power. Additional advantages come from the fact that assist gas requirements are significantly reduced.

Freshlook Engineering was one of the first UK companies to try Dual-Focus technology. Production manager Jez Kent was in no doubt about the impact of Dual-Focus lenses on their productivity...

"We doubled our cutting speeds of 6mm stainless using 70% less N2 gas, and produced a dross free, almost polished finish. With the same lens we got similar results in terms of quality on 2mm stainless."

How Do Dual-Focus Lenses Work?

A Dual-Focus lens has two focal points. The inner portion of a laser beam is intercepted by a section of the lens, of diameter '2h', which has a longer focal length (FL) than the outer part of the lens. The 'basic focal length' is F. The difference in FL is dF.

This results is high energy density and increased localised temperature at both the upper and the lower foci.
